Where
and when were you born?
I was born in Sydney, Australia in 1961.
How long have you been dancing? What
other styles of dancing have you done?
I have always wanted to dance. I began at age 6, studying
classical ballet, jazz ballet and tap dancing until my late teens
when my interest turned to ballroom and Latin American dancing.
I'm also not ashamed to admit that I was the proverbial "disco
dolly" in the late '70's/early '80's - oh yes, I'm that old!
After a decade of dormant years, I returned to dance in 1999
when I discovered my passion for belly dancing. Initially I was
looking for a hobby, a means of exercise and a way of meeting
and making new friends. I became truly captivated by the whole
concept of bellydance - the many beautiful styles, philosophies,
costumes etc. I took up several different classes simultaneously
which introduced me to a variety of styles including modern and
classical Egyptian, pharaonic and baladi.
How long have you been doing Tribal style? What appeals
to you about Tribal?
In Feb 2000 I commenced Tribal classes with Devi Mamak. I felt
immediately drawn to her like a magnet. I was completely taken
with the beautiful structure, poise and elegance of the ATS based
Tribal Style of bellydance that Devi was teaching and I have remained
her devoted student ever since. I find the exacting technique
and execution of steps quite difficult to master however I always
have fun trying!
My daughter Kate would come with me to classes out of child-minding
necessity. She would try the moves on the sidelines and eventually
started to attend classes with me as Devi's youngest student in
2002. We both formally joined Devi's performance troupe Ghawazi
Caravan in Jan 2003 and are very proud to be a part of such a
wonderful group. The comaraderie between the dancers and the excitement
of improvisation make the classes and performances so much fun!
What do you do for a living? Other hobbies?
I currently work full-time in Human Resources administration.
I am at the moment too busy for other hobbies but I do enjoy spending
time with my family and friends. Life is quite hectic but I feel
that my dancing creates the balance I need.
What unusual talents do you have?
I don't know about any 'unusual' talents however I pride myself
in always being able to see the bright side!
If Tribal is your current passion, what was your previous
passion?
I realize now that there was a void in my life that has now been
filled due to my passion for tribal style bellydancing. I think
everyone needs a hobby or activity to be passionate about!
Where do you see yourself and Ghawazi Caravan in the
future?
I think we have had the novelty experience of being the pioneer
tribal troupe in Eastern Australia and I am very happy to have
played a some small part in the development of tribal style in
Australia. I believe that tribal style will increase in popularity
and I look forward to continuing with Ghawazi Caravan and encouraging
friendship with new 'sister' tribes! |
